A majority of Americans reject the radical idea that guys must be permitted to play on females’s sports teams just because they “recognize” as ladies.
A new Gallup News survey discovered that opposition to transgender professional athletes using groups that match their “gender identity” is rising, as much as 69 percent in 2023 from 62 percent in 2021. At the very same time, fewer Americans believe transgender professional athletes should be permitted to deviate from biological reality to play on teams in accordance with their “gender identity,” at 26 percent below 34 percent in 2021.

The survey found that higher public opposition to transgender professional athletes competing on groups incongruent with their biology comes as more U.S. grownups state they personally know a transgender person, as much as 39 percent from 31 percent in 2021.
“However both Americans who understand and do not know a transgender individual have actually ended up being less helpful of enabling transgender professional athletes to play on the team of their option,” according to the survey report. “Presently, 30 percent of those who understand a transgender person favor allowing professional athletes to use teams that match their present gender identity, down from 40 percent in 2021. Amongst those who do not understand a transgender person, assistance is now 23 percent, below 31 percent.”

By political association, Republicans, Democrats, and independents are “all modestly less supportive of transgender professional athletes using current gender identity groups today than two years back,” the study found. Supermajorities of independents (67 percent) and Republicans (93 percent) remain opposed to providing transgender professional athletes a choice of competing on males’s or females’s groups.
Interestingly, Democrats “are now divided” on permitting transgender professional athletes to play on teams that match their “gender identity.” In 2021, 55 percent of Democrats stated they support transgender professional athletes’ discrepancy from biological truth, compared to 47 percent in 2023.
“Political liberals are the lone major subgroup revealing majority (57 percent) support for permitting transgender athletes to choose which team to play on,” the survey discovered.
This survey found that youths became a little more helpful of transgender professional athletes overlooking their biology, up to 41 percent from 35 percent in 2021, though not a majority.
Gallup also asked participants whether they believe modification one’s sex is “morally wrong.” As soon as once again, more Americans (55 percent) sided against transgender ideology than in 2021, when 51 percent stated altering one’s sex is wrong. This year, 43 percent of those surveyed state modifications one’s sex is “ethically appropriate.”
“The view that changing one’s gender is morally appropriate has actually decreased more among Republicans and individuals who do not know a transgender individual– down seven percentage points amongst both groups given that 2021,” the survey found. “On the other hand, roughly 7 in 10 Democrats and 6 in 10 individuals who know a transgender individual continue to say gender change is ethically acceptable. Independents are divided on the concern, however their views, too, haven’t altered.”
By age, more youthful grownups ages 18 to 29 are most likely to dub sex changes “morally acceptable” (60 percent), than 30 to 49-year-olds (48 percent), and Americans 50 and older (32 percent). The survey discovered that older Americans are less most likely now than in 2021 (39 percent) to think sex changes are ethically appropriate.
Gallup News summarized that, based upon the poll results, “laws that limit involvement for transgender athletes are typically in line with U.S. public opinion on the concern.” The findings come as the Biden administration threatens to make federal financing contingent on schools enabling kids to play on women’ sports groups, and as a minimum of 20 states resist to safeguard ladies and women’ spaces.
“It appears that Americans see transgender sports involvement more through a lens of competitive fairness than transgender civil liberties,” the survey report states. “Even Democrats, who mostly support LGBTQ+ rights and verify the morality of gender modification, are divided on the problem of whether transgender professional athletes ought to be permitted to take part on groups that match their gender identity rather than birth gender.”

The Gallup News survey is in line with another poll released last week from PRRI which found a significant increase between 2021 and 2023 of Americans across various demographics embracing the fact that people are either male or female.
According to that poll, 59 percent of Americans in 2021 stated there are only males and females, while 40 percent thought there are “many gender identities.” By 2022, 62 percent believed in two sexes, while 35 percent believed in many gender identities. This year, the divide increased again, with 65 percent of Americans saying there are just two sexes and 34 percent stating there are many, the survey discovered.
The PRRI study also discovered that every generation increasingly leaned toward thinking in biological reality between 2021 and 2023. The pattern is significant with Generation Z, given that the younger generation tends to choose Democrats more and place less emphasis on traditional American values, such as patriotism, religious beliefs, and household structure.
“Younger generations are substantially less most likely to believe that there are just 2 genders, but belief in a gender binary has actually increased among both Generation Z and millennials over the past several years,” the study found. “In 2021, Generation Z (43 percent) and millennials (51 percent) were more carefully aligned with each other on this concern than they were with Generation X (65 percent), baby boomers (62 percent), and the Quiet Generation (68 percent).”
“In 2023, Generation Z saw a jump in the belief that there are just 2 genders (rising to 57 percent, from 43 percent in 2021). In 2023, members of Generation Z (57 percent) and millennials (60 percent) still hold closer beliefs to each other on this question than they do to Generation X (71 percent), infant boomers (68 percent), and the Silent Generation (69 percent),” the survey report continues.
Furthermore, the Washington Post-KFF surveylaunched in May found that 62 percent opposed permitting trans athletes in youth sports, 66 percent opposed trans addition in high school sports, and 65 percent opposed trans addition in college and professional sports. Rasmussen Reports polls have discovered that 57 percent of Americans strongly concur that “there are [only] two genders, male and woman.”
The Gallup News survey was conducted between May 1-24, with 1,011 U.S. grownups. The margin of error is ± 4 percent at the 95 percent confidence level.
