Der Impfpass– A Kafkian narrative

Somebody should have slandered Josef K, for one morning, without having actually done anything really incorrect, he was jailed.

His landlady, Frau Grubach, had a cook who brought him breakfast every day around eight, however this time she didn’t appear. Rather, there were two gentlemen in dark grey clothing standing by the door.

“Might we see your vaccine passport?” they asked.

Josef K, who was an unemployed bachelor and kept mainly in the house, wasn’t mindful that he should have taken any sort of vaccine, much less carry a “vaccine passport” with him, a concept which he didn’t actually comprehend even though the 2 gentlemen described it to him in utmost information.

After denying having a vaccine passport, certificate, QR-code, or any evidence of present and current vaccination, the two gentlemen declared his arrest.

“But why am I being arrested?” asked Josef K, timidly and pleasantly, as he disliked being disrespectful even to strangers who woke him up early in the early morning unannounced.

The two gentlemen continued to discuss that there was a dreadful infectious illness going around in the city, and given that now vaccines against it were necessary and he hadn’t gotten one, nor had he the previously mentioned vaccCcine certificate or passport, he was threatening public health and security.

Josef K replied that he didn’t understand how he could possibly be threatening anybody, much less the entire of society, because he had never ever had such illness they were discussing, and hence might not have spread it. Furthermore, he hardly left his house nowadays. However it was to no get.

The gentlemen were adamant that he was a criminal for not sending to the still-experimental medical procedure, which was, however, they ensured him, “100% safe and reliable”.

“However why is this vaccine compulsory?” he asked. “Can’t it just be optional for those who desire it?”

The reply was that only with a 100% fully vaccinated population, which by then meant two “jabs” plus another “booster” every 6 months, could the city reach “herd immunity”, and therefore stop the spread of the disease and end the pandemic.

“So the vaccine includes the spread of the illness?”, asked Josef.

Here, the two gentlemen had to make an ashamed pause and admit that it didn’t really stop the spread, which in truth there had actually been more cases given that the vaccine was presented than before it, however insisted that the unvaccinated were the problem, due to the fact that by irresponsibly being unvaccinated they were offering a bad example to the remainder of the population. Besides, the principle of “vaccine passports” could not totally work if people didn’t get their compulsory vaccines every 6 months.

“But if the vaccine does not contain the spread, then what is the point of the vaccine passports?”, Josef asked.

Here, the 2 gentlemen needed to make an ashamed pause again, and inform him that the point of the vaccine passports was to require people to be vaccinated, so that they would be protected from contagion by the unvaccinated, despite the fact that they might still get it from the immunized, but a minimum of it might supply beneficial tracking information to the authorities. Just with overall vaccination would it be possible for society to “go back to regular.”

“However if we need a vaccine every 6 months, and a ‘vaccine passport’ to go anywhere, and still have to wear masks inside your home, and experience lockdowns every winter, and not even get rid of the illness, then how is this in any way ‘back to regular?'”, Josef asked again.

Here the gentlemen started to lose their perseverance. One of them made a threatening gesture and the other relocated to obstruct the door, in case Josef K was just attempting to distract them with complex concerns while planning an escape.

Josef K still did not comprehend why they were attempting to arrest him, nor why a “vaccine passport” could be required by anybody, healthy or ill, but guidelines were guidelines.

Besides, the two gentlemen informed him that he could prevent the fines and the long jail sentence if he would simply follow them to the closest vaccination centre that very same day.

So he did as purchased and took a double-vaccine, plus a number of “boosters” at the exact same time, simply in case.

The next morning he woke up from uneasy dreams and discovered himself changed in his bed into a gigantic bug. But that’s another story …
