If we were a Christian country under Wilson and Truman, when exactly did America cease to be a Christian country?
Here we are on the eve of Christmas, that day of joy set aside for commemorating the birth of Christ who came down to earth 2,000 years ago to show mankind the way to eternal redemption.
Yet, the present state of mind of America at Christmas 2021 appears much better captured by Jimmy Carter in his “malaise speech” in July of 1979, a number of days before he cashiered half of his Cabinet.
“The danger” to America, stated Carter, “is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very body and soul and spirit of our national will. We can see this crisis in the growing doubt about the meaning of our own lives and in the loss of a unity of function for our nation.”
Carter’s speech, showing the state of mind of the nation, was at first well gotten. However when his dirge ended up being contrasted with the optimism about America of Ronald Reagan, Carter was sent out packaging. He lost 44 states.
